The time has come for me
To break out of this shell
I have to shout
That I am coming out
– The iconic Diana Ross, “I’m Coming Out”
In 1994, a brave and wise man decided that there should be a month dedicated to learning about and celebrating gay and lesbian history. As Mr. Rodney Wilson was a high school teacher in Missouri, he tapped his resources (fellow teachers and community leaders) for support and discussion. The group collectively decided on October since the 11th is known nationally as Coming Out Day. And what was then known as Gay and Lesbian History Month.
Now expanded to LGBT History Month, October signifies a time to learn more about role models, build our community and celebrate who we are. To learn more about great LGBT role models, definitely visit the LGBT History Month home page where a different role model is featured on each day of October!
There are several events this month that celebrate the LGBT Community including:
And of course everyone loves to “get their spook on” in October, and David Flower Productions once again offers its annual Ghost Town Haunted Attraction on October 23-31 to scare you witless!
Other activities to enjoy this month include the Provincetown Fall Monumental Yard Sale Weekend on October 10-13, and the amazing Provincetown Dance Festival on October 24-26 offering dance performances of all types.
October is certainly a great time to visit. Besides a month packed full of events and happenings, fall takes over the shores of our town featuring crisp mornings and changing colors. Won’t you join us?
