Provincetown’s Pets, Leather, and Tennessee Williams in Late September

Autumn can be the best time to visit New England with the gorgeous trees, the fair weather and the crispness in the morning air.  Of course, ANY time is the right time to visit P-Town, and we’ve already given you reason to visit early in the month.  But now, the member B and Bs of the Distinctive Inns of Provincetown would like to offer three very exciting reasons to plan your vacation to the tip of Cape Cod in late September!

Tennessee Williams Festival

September 20-23, 2012
Tennessee Williams was, of course, a master playwright, screenwriter, novelist, and, poet from 1930 to 1983, whose importance and relevance to the theater endures to this very day.  His more-known works like A Streetcar Named Desire, The Parade, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Glass Menagerie, and Camino Real brought then-controversial subjects to the American public including schizophrenia, homosexuality, psychoses, and racism… while making the topics both amusing and cathartic.  And that’s what we love about him.

Experiencing a play with accompanying music is completely different than reading Tennessee Williams’ works on paper, and this year’s Festival explores the role and entertainment value of music he used in his plays.  A Streetcar Named Desire wouldn’t be the same without the “Varsouviana Polka” and “Paper Moon.”  The narrator in The Glass Menagerie specifically states that memories are accompanied by music… and so they are in the play.  Throughout many of his works, Williams used music for both meaning and enjoyment, and we will touch on many of them this weekend in nine performances by troupes from the US and abroad.
